Mark Watson – This Can’t Be It

We've all had some pondering to do about the fragility of life recently, but don't worry, skinny national treasure Mark Watson has it covered.  At 41, he's halfway through his days on earth, according to the life expectancy calculator app he paid £1.49 for. That life is in the best shape in living memory... but one problem remains, and it really is a huge one.

Spiritual enquiry meets high-octane observational comedy as the 'Taskmaster' survivor, multi-award-winner and “No More Jockeys” cult leader attempts to cram a couple of years of pathological overthinking into an evening of stand-up. Maybe we'll even solve the huge problem. Doubt it, though.

THE GARDEN-ORCHARD

Take a stroll through the delightful fell-side garden behind Dove Cottage, which Wordsworth referred to as a ‘little domestic slip of mountain’.

The garden has been restored to the half-wild state that Wordsworth and Dorothy lovingly created from local plants and materials. It was a place of peace and inspiration for Wordsworth, who would often compose poetry outdoors.

Whether you see snowdrops in winter, daffodils and bluebells in spring, an abundance of wildflowers through summer, or the changing colours of the leaves in autumn, Dove Cottage garden is stunning in all seasons.

THE MUSEUM

Discover William Wordsworth’s remarkable story through a unique collection of some of the greatest treasures from the Romantic age. Objects, maps and interactive displays will help you to unravel the adventures that shaped Wordsworth’s thoughts and inspirations.

The Museum will have a range of activities for children. Have a go at writing with a quill and ink, dress up in Georgian clothes, play with traditional toys or take on a Minecraft challenge.

DOVE COTTAGE

In late 1799, while on a walking tour of the Lake District, William Wordsworth saw Dove Cottage in Grasmere and decided to make it his home. He had known the valley as a boy, describing it as ‘paradise’. Within a few weeks, Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy had moved in and were busily furnishing the home and planning a garden.  It was whilst living here that Wordsworth produced most of his greatest and best-loved poems, and Dorothy wrote her fascinating Grasmere journal.

A visit to Dove Cottage today transports you back to this remarkable period of ‘plain living and high thinking’. The sights, sounds and smells bring to life the bustling family home the Wordsworths would have known over 200 years ago. In this humble Lake District cottage, you can feel how a unique combination of people and place came together and changed poetry forever.

THE GARDEN-ORCHARD

Take a stroll through the delightful fell-side garden behind Dove Cottage, which Wordsworth referred to as a ‘little domestic slip of mountain’.

Santa Steam Specials

Santa Specials
PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING!

Thank you for considering booking tickets for our Santa Specials, we’d love to welcome you onboard!

As you’ll appreciate, we’re having to release tickets for sale before we know what the situation looks like in December and what, if any, restrictions may come back into force at that time.  We very much hope that Christmas will look much more normal, but we hope you understand if last minute changes are necessary.

We’ll continue with doing a few things differently to help stop the spread of the virus.  There’ll be hand sanitiser available throughout your visit and we’ll be managing social distancing by seating family groups and support bubbles in separate compartments or areas, away from other passengers.  However, we still really want you to have a great time and enjoy that festive feeling.  Christmas comes just once a year after all!

If you’ve visited us recently you’ll know that we’ve changed the way we’re selling tickets with each family group being seated in their own compartment or area with table seating of up to eight people, separate from other passengers.  To book, simply choose the date and time you wish to travel and select one of the available compartments.  Then, select the different ticket types for the people travelling with you and ‘seat not required’ for any you don’t need.  That just stops anyone else from being able to sit with you on the day to help maintain social distancing.

Once onboard, you’ll enjoy a mince pie or festive biscuit as you travel the line and when you return to Bitton Station you’ll meet Santa and have the chance to take family photographs with him.  All good boys and girls will receive a present from him too!  But, like last year, he’s going to have to make some changes to the gifts he gives out as the virus (and now supply issues caused by Brexit) is causing no end of problems for his elves in Lapland.  They’re having real problems getting hold of the things they need to make presents for all the little boys and girls.  Therefore, specifically for this year, he’ll be giving a gift suitable for all ages 1 – 7 which will be in the form of a high quality Avon Valley Railway ‘Station Master’ plush teddy bear with a couple of presents suitable for our youngest infant visitors as well as older boys and girls aged 8+.

The most important thing is that we’ll do our best to provide all of the usual elements of our Santa experience; the train ride, the chance to meet Santa and a present for all children.  But, as you’ll appreciate, this year may remain very different and restrictions may be re-imposed at the last minute meaning some of these may just not be possible on the day, but we’ll do our absolute best to make it happen where we can.

Finally, you’ll be pleased to know that the festive Christmas donkeys will be returning once again and you’ll be able to see these on the lawn at Bitton Station, either before or after you’ve travelled on the train.  Once you’ve left our elves will then be working hard cleaning and sanitising the train before the next passengers arrive.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to our Santa Specials!

Dave Spikey

Funny things happen all the time. Normal events don’t catch the eye but Dave’s special radar instinctively draws him to the small out-of-the-ordinary events and conversations that wash over most of us and pass us by. Once identified, he applies his unique style of exaggerating and elaborating them whilst reminding us that we too have not only witnessed them, it’s probably happened to us! It’s this added dimension, this comedy of association that elevates the event to laugh-out-loud funny.

No wonder Time Out magazine said of him, “Not only a very funny comedian but one of the finest raconteurs around.”

Only Fools - The (cushty) Dining Experience

Interactive Theatre International presents…

Only Fools - The (cushty) Dining Experience

This is a knees-up like no other! Critically acclaimed, Only Fools The (cushty) Dining Experience is by the people behind the worldwide smash hit, Faulty Towers The Dining Experience. And as it continues both its London residency and its tour around the UK, it’s also coming to Bowdon!

In this fully immersive and highly interactive show, audiences are transported to The Nags Head to join the pride of Peckham in a night of wheeling, dealing and non-stop laughing. The Trotters want to drum up some cash and make a cheeky saving on the side in two hours of mayhem that sees everyone stopping by including fan favourites like Cassandra, Trigger, Marlene, Uncle Albert and more.

Deals are brokered, schemes are hatched and quizzes are quizzed in a downright triffic event that even comes with some cushty pub grub. Youd be a plonker to miss it!

Exceptional. One of the most hysterical, unique and well produced nights out in Britain in 2019! ★★★★★ Celebrity Radio, Petwood 2019

Only Fools The (cushty) Dining Experience launched on 20 September 2018 to immediate acclaim. It is a wholly original immersive theatre show written by ITI in loving tribute to the Only Fools & Horses TV series.

A Festive Night In With Rob King & Kiki DeVille

Stars of Television’s biggest talent shows Rob King and Kiki DeVille team up to bring you an intimate evening filled with the classic Christmas songs of yesteryear.

Already an established performer around Manchester, singer and actor Rob King is most recognisable for reaching the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2019. Growing up locally in Altrincham, Rob has gone on to become one of the region’s leading male vocalists. Gracing stages around the country with his huge voice, Rob has performed in some of the nation’s largest theatres in concert and pantomime.

Kiki DeVille, a stand-out star of The Voice UK series three, has forged a glittering three-decade career as an internationally-renowned and award-winning Cabaret star. Hailing from Australia, and with an enormous voice (and even bigger heart), Kiki is the kind of performer who leaves you feeling like she is your new best friend every time she graces a stage.

The pair first met as judges within “The 100” on BBC One’s All Together Now in 2017, and have been firm friends ever since. Now, for the first time, this dynamic duo combine their unique powerhouse vocals in a distinctly vintage style to transport you back to the festive specials of Hollywood’s Golden Age, in an intimate evening packed with laughter, stories, and their favourite Christmas hits. Not to be missed!

China Crisis

China Crisis were never your run-of-the-mill 80s pop band. Formed in Liverpool by singer Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon, they distilled their love of David Bowie and Steely Dan into an exquisitely melancholy post-punk sound that saw them win their just chart rewards. Has there ever been a more wistful Top 10 hit than the charming Wishful Thinking?

Their hero Walter Becker – of Steely Dan fame – was so impressed he even became a band member back in 1985, producing and playing on Top 10 album Flaunt the Imperfection, and returning for 1989’s hugely acclaimed Diary of a Hollow Horse. And, all the while, the hits kept rolling in… Christian, Black Man Ray and King in a Catholic Style all made their way into the UK Top 20

Jack and the Beanstalk

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
A new pantomime by Elaine McCann

In Bumble Green, the villagers get together to hear if they’ve won  ‘The Happiest Village in Salford’  award for the tenth year running.   Chelsey Bunne is covering the event for CBTV,  Daisy the Cow has made sure she gets a front row seat with her best friend, Jack  - and Jack’s Mum, Dame Dolly Potts, has her acceptance speech ready.

This time though, things don’t turn out exactly as everyone expected and the whole village has to come together to beat the Ogre at his own game !  But in the end, as in all pantomimes,  Good triumphs over Bad and happiness returns to Bumble Green !

With an Ogre’s castle in the clouds, a Beanstalk that grows out of nowhere, Goodies and Baddies galore - and plenty of  singing, dancing and fun – Salford’s own Barton Theatre Company 2022 panto is, once more, a show for all the family .

Laid - A Tribute to James

On Saturday 19th May 2018 Mike Hadfield, lead singer, had a VIP ticket to the sound check prior to the James gig at King George’s Hall Blackburn. During the question and answer session Mike grabbed the microphone and asked the band their thoughts of him setting up a tribute band to honour their music. After deliberating as a band, Saul spoke for them saying “Go for it!” and Tim Booth gave his blessing. Mike set to work gathering the troops to create a band of fans for fans: Laid - a tribute to James.

Laid have hit the tribute scene with lightning pace, receiving high praise everywhere they play. Bookings all over the country have come in thick and fast and the band have marked their territory as the leading tribute to one of the best bands to come out of Manchester. Playing all the hits including “Sit Down”, “She’s a Star”, “Tomorrow”, “Come Home” and “Laid” they are destined for great things.

An Audience with King Henry VIII
‘The year is 1544 and King Henry, the Eighth of that name, is engaged upon Royal Progress about his Realm; and has halted here to afford his Loyal Subjects the opportunity to have 'audience' with their Sovereign Lord and King.

The King, recently married to his new, and sixth, wife, Queen Catherine Parr, is in poor health; his leg continues to cause him considerable pain and he is often in a poor humour!

In the course of the 'audience', His Majesty will recount the events of his long reign; telling of his wives and his children, and His Majesty will invite his Loyal Subjects to Petition him or question him on ANY related subject : there may be some surprising answers - a lively Q&A is assured!’

3-6-9

"Where would we be without numbers? We sometimes make the mistake of seeing ‘maths ’as a scary subject, even when we are very little. But, in reality, numbers are all around us. Three meals a day, one pair of shoes, one green bottle. Three blind mice, two turtle doves, one big bad wolf. Wherever you look and wherever you go there are always numbers to be found.

This exciting, visual, and physical performance uses a combination of music, play, and curiosity in order to explore the joy of numbers and their occurrence in everyday life.

3-6-9 by Babble Lab sits somewhere between theatre, dance, and play. This is thanks, in part, to the vision of its director Mole Wetherell of Reckless Sleepers. In 2019 Reckless Sleepers created its first ever performance for children called It’s Hot, It’s Not for the Unicorn Theatre in London. In March 2022 It’s Hot, It’s Not travels to The Lowry.

Mike Sweeney’s 60’s Classic

Together with special guest Ray Ennis (the original Swinging Blue Jeans), broadcasting legend Mike Sweeney takes to the stage in a show packed with the very best of 60s music!

As lead singer of The Salford Jets, Mike had a string of hit singles in the 70’s and 80’s including Who You Looking At and Gina I’ve Got A Cortina.  His music career has also seen him fronting 60’s hit band The Mindbenders (Groovy Kind of Love – which later became a massive hit for Phil Collins) during the 80s and 90s. Mike is currently the host of BBC Radio Manchester’s Morning Show, where his absolute authority on music (particularly the sounds of the 60s) coupled with his funny and straight-talking views unsurprisingly draws flocks of fans every day.

Ray Ennis achieved chart success with the original Swinging Blue Jeans with some of the most iconic rock & roll songs ever made – Hippy Hippy Shake, Good Golly Miss Molly and You’re No Good, to name just a few.

Carlos Pons - Mariposa

Mariposa: a Transgender Tragedy Inspired by Puccini’s Madame Butterfly

Under the flickering neon lights of a distant Caribbean port, a local rent boy and a
foreign sailor fall ominously in love in choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra’s
inventive reimagining of Puccini’s seminal opera. DeNada Dance Theatre’s
Madame Butterfly is immersed in a mist of Havana smoke, within which a young
man is asked to sacrifice his gender in exchange of love and a better life.

Mariposa is an operatic dance drama that transports Puccini’s Orientalist libretto
to post-revolution Cuba, to a dockland world of faded showgirls, hopeful rent
boys, troubled sailors and santeria spirits. Engulfed in a tropical storm of
repressed desires, this brand new production is a passionate and deeply moving
exploration of what we are ready to sacrifice in order to be loved and accepted.
Set to an original score by Spanish composer Luis Miguel Cobo, which takes its
inspiration from Caribbean sounds as well as Puccini, with libretto by French-
Indian writer Karthika Nair and designs by Ryan Laight, Mariposa is performed
by the diverse international cast of DeNada Dance Theatre, a UK Critic’s Circle
National Dance Awards nominee in the category of Best Independent Company.

Dave Spikey - A Funny Thing Happened....I shot Derek Rigby
This show was simply going to be called “I shot Derek Rigby” which Dave has freely admitted to ; in fact this has never been in doubt - there were several witnesses - but (there’s always a “but”) he thought that might be a little too weird a title so, although he will talk about the shooting in some depth (Because, to be fair, it was funny to all present with the exception of Derek), he will concentrate on the many other funny things that happen all the time.

Funny things happen at home, at work, out shopping, at the Vets, in Prison, out with his eccentric Gran and in Hong Kong - obviously. Dave’s comedy radar has always instinctively drawn him to these small out-of-the-ordinary events that wash over most of us and pass us by. Once identified, he analysis and elaborates them in his own way whilst at the same time reminding us that not only have we too witnessed them, they’ve probably happened to us!

It’s this added dimension, this comedy of association that elevates the events to laugh-out-loud funny. No wonder Time Out magazine said of him, “Not only a very funny comedian but one of the finest raconteurs around”

"They're Really Good" - Paul Heaton

With an unrivalled, energetic, soulful and, at times, playful show, The Southmartins play the hits and bits of The Beautiful South and The Housemartins and have carved themselves a unique niche in the world of tribute acts.

With a voice as close as you could hope for to Paul Heaton plus a band of lively musicians and a healthy irreverence for the songs and arrangements, often taking the songs off in unexpected directions whilst staying true to the spirit of the original bands their gigs are becoming the thing of legend with mass singalongs and unpredictable occurrences a regular feature.
With a choice selection of bona fide British pop hits such as Happy Hour, Caravan of Love, Perfect 10, Good as Gold, You Keep It All In, Song For Whoever and many more their gigs promise to leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

The band formed in late 2009 and have been playing across the UK ever since to increasingly large crowds who often follow them across their tours and travel great distances to catch them. From initial forays into pubs and clubs to dedicated music venues, festivals and having the distinction of being the first tribute to be invited to play at Paul Heaton's Salford venue, The Kings Arms, on the eve of Paul and Jacqui Abbott's "comeback" album 'What Have We Become' the band have acquired high praise indeed with Paul himself endorsing them on BBC Radio 2 saying "they're really good".

Theatre Re: Bluebelle
Bluebelle
A journey into the wilderness of parenthood

If you see a bluebell, pick it, ring it three times and repeat the following words:
'Bluebell, bluebell, fairy flower, I beckon your greatest power’.
Then, place it near your heart and the Bluebell Fairy will come to you.

Long ago and far away a King and Queen were placed under a spell. Fertility was disrupted. They called the Bluebell Fairy, but magic comes at a cost and woe betide those who do not keep their promises.

Weaving together plots, objects and characters from ancient folktales collected by Angela Carter, Italo Calvino, the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, as well as interviews with parents and carers, Bluebelle reminds us that life is shaped by the stories we tell and leave behind.

Through Theatre Re's signature style combining visually striking poetic theatre and lyrical live music, Bluebelle is a wondrous and mysterious tale about life and how to protect it.

Kattam Katti – Pagrav Dance Company

Kattam Katti (meaning Cutting Through in English) is an exquisite piece of modern dance theatre rooted in the Indian Kathak dance tradition. There are eight performers - four dancers and four musicians. The musicians play specially composed music live and are integral to the show as they move around the dancers and interact with them.

The show transports its audience to Uttarayan, the world-famous kite festival that takes place in Gujarat, North India. Tales of competition, danger, excitement and unity are vividly brought to life in a joyous, colourful and uplifting show.

This neo classical work has a distinctly contemporary feel developed out of the South Asian dance tradition. Tapping into the chaos, creativity and colour of the kite festival, Kattam Katti brings to life the excitement of Uttarayan with lyricism, drama and exquisite technique. It illustrates the highs, lows, loves and losses of lives that are lived out among the festivities.

The show is suitable for all ages and backgrounds and runs for 60 minutes with no interval.

Choreographed by Urja Desai Thakore (BBC Young Dancer choreographer) and based on her personal observations of the festival and Gujarati heritage, kite flying becomes a metaphor for the inequalities of privilege in societies and in the corporate world.
Kattam Katti is performed by a new generation of British dancers of Indian heritage. Pagrav Dance Company is highly committed to nurturing the next generation by providing a supportive platform for emerging dancers.

‘a striking and exquisite work, Kattam Katti is the antidote we all need in the current climate’
Maya Pinder, The Insanity in Dancing on an early sharing

‘a work of lightness that rides the wind-soaked eddies; the crack team of musicians combine to elevate the work to a higher realm’ Ian Abbott, author, curator, academic on an early sharing

‘Pagrav Dance Theatre's latest show Kattam Katti is rich and beautifully layered, and is sure to engage both new and existing audiences. The interplay between dance, music and narrative is deftly woven and perfectly balanced, and the brilliantly designed piece is engaging, moving and playful.’

Two new-in-town brothers discover a local gang of motorcycle youths (including a young Kiefer Sutherland) are more undead than alive. Younger brother Sam (Corey Haim) works hard to eradicate the ghouls but his older brother (Jason Patric) falls in love with the group's lone female (Jami Gertz). Soon, he finds that he's gradually becoming a vampire himself.
Shot on location in the coastal California town of Santa Cruz, The Lost Boys became a pop-culture phenomenon thanks to its attractive young stars, off beat soundtrack, and hip, clever marketing campaign. The film's tagline: "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire." perfectly captured its knowing mixture of attitude and gore.

Double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Ahir Shah returns to stand-up with a new show about significance, insignificance, and scurvy. Featuring his signature blend of philosophical inquiry, personal examination, and sweet gags, Live promises to be the single greatest work of art ever named after a probably apocryphal quote from Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.

Ahir’s last show, Dots, was recorded as a special for HBO Max (albeit after a 14 month delay brought about by events you may recall). That show was about uncertainty. Ideally, this tour will end in a way that is less on the nose.

Spirit Of The Blitz

To celebrate this very special anniversary, we open the 1940s songbook for a tribute to the legendary stars who kept us smiling through our darkest days. Spirit Of The Blitz recaptures the tenacious optimism of war-torn Britain on the long road towards peace.

Sing along to swinging hits like Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree, Bless 'Em All, Leaning On A Lamp-Post, and of course, We'll Meet Again.
Starring Andy Eastwood, Maggie O’Hara and Pete Lindup, this feel-good show recreates all your forties favourites, including Vera Lynn, George Formby, Max Miller, Bing Crosby, Anne Shelton and Gracie Fields... A truly heart-warming afternoon of live music and laughter.

For those who remember the 40s, the show is a trip down memory lane; for those who don't, it’s a Sentimental Journey back through time to the glorious melodies and good clean comedy that accompanied a dogged nation's battle for survival.

This unmissable performance is devised and produced by Andy Eastwood, with musical direction by David Carter.

A comedy about a clown who decides to follow government guidelines to retrain; so gets a real job

In this one man, family show, Tweedy illustrates an impressive repertoire of comedic talents which have made him one of the most respected and popular clowns the country currently has to offer.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent his life in pursuit of extreme adventure, risking life and limb in some of the most ambitious private expeditions ever undertaken.

Amongst his many record-breaking achievements, he was the first to reach both Poles, the first to cross the Antarctic and Arctic Ocean, and the first to circumnavigate the world along its polar axis.

In Living Dangerously, Sir Ranulph offers a personal journey through his life, from his early years to the present day. Both light-hearted and strikingly poignant, Living Dangerously spans Sir Ranulph’s childhood and school misdemeanours, his army life and early expeditions, right through the Transglobe Expedition to his current Global Reach Challenge - his goal to become the first person in the world to cross both polar ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ many endeavours have pushed his endurance levels to the very limits, inspiring generations and making him a pioneer of exploration with an unparalleled story to tell.

Stacey Dooley

Stacey Dooley has firmly established herself as one of the most recognisable faces on British TV. Alongside her hugely popular BBC investigative series, in which she covered a diverse range of topics from across the world, the documentary maker and author of the Sunday Times bestseller, On the Frontline with the Women Who Fight Back, is also the presenter of BBC1's This Is My House; BBC2’s DNA; Glow Up for BBC3, and W's Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over – and lest we forget, our 2018 Strictly champion.

Following several sell-out UK tours, Stacey is heading back on the road to celebrate the publication of her new book, which explores the mental health crisis in Britain and its particular impact on young people, inspired by Stacey’s two most recent documentaries on mental health.

In conversation for these limited events, Stacey will open up the conversation about mental health in young people, to challenge the stigma and stereotypes around it. Having worked in collaboration with mental health experts and charities, Stacey will responsibly share the stories of young people in the UK directly affected by mental health issues, in order to shine a light on life on the mental health frontline and give a voice to young people throughout the UK who are living with mental health conditions across the spectrum.

Stacey will also touch on related, broader topics which she has tackled in her documentaries – poverty, addiction, identity, the pressures of social media – and look back on the stand-out moments and interactions from her wide-reaching career.

Join her for what promises to be a thought-provoking, inspiring and informative evening. With a chance to try your own hand at journalism and ask Stacey the questions, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Ladykiller
A hotel room, a chambermaid and a  dead woman. It’s not what it looks like,  really, it’s not. It was self-defence…  and anyway the woman was asking for  it.

The chambermaid considers herself to  be a pretty normal person; she reads  books. She pretended to read the  party manifestos at the General  Election. She’s even read The
Psychopath Test and she’s pretty sure  she’s not one so…

After rave reviews and sold out shows  at Edinburgh Fringe 2018 and Vault  Festival 2019, Ladykiller is a blood soaked morality tale about victimhood, power and flipping the gender rule book on psychopathy.  Charting one woman’s journey from  violent oppression to bloody revolution, it is the (gruesome)  quintessential jet-black comedy for  the age of the gig economy.

As You Like It
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Laurie Sansom
Designed by E.M. Parry

In their 30th anniversary production, Northern Broadsides bring their bold, refreshing style to Shakespeare’s most musical and much-loved comedy for the very first time.

In a stylish but stifling court, where the Duke is all powerful and brute strength is championed over basic human decency, the high-spirited Rosalind and devoted cousin Celia are no longer welcome. When they escape into the forest in disguise, they bump into the recent object of Rosalind’s affection, Orlando, leading to an elaborate game of fluid identity where all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.

As the seasons change in this magical place, normal roles dissolve and assumptions are turned on their head in this celebration of the transformative power of love and the natural world, featuring some of Shakespeare’s most vivid characters and memorable poetry. With a cast of 12 fabulous Northern actors, Northern Broadsides take to the road once more in a production by Laurie Sansom which captures the sheer joy of live performance and the crazy power of love to change the world.

Atlas

Oddly Moving present Atlas
Produced by Turtle Key Arts

Atlas was punished by the Gods to hold the weight of the cosmos for a long time -
perhaps an eternity. He’s not sure if he is a man or a mountain or a giant. His back
hurts. He wonders what would happen if he just let go.

Oddly Moving’s new show explores the Greek myth of Atlas interwoven with
personal stories about the metaphorical weight we each bear or let go of. Addressing
themes of choice, responsibility and the individual worlds that define us.

Directed by Charlotte Mooney of Ockham’s Razor and with Oddly Moving’s unique
blend of physical theatre, autobiographical storytelling and circus skills (with a
rudimentary understanding of physics) Atlas looks at how we each bear the weight of
our personal burdens, our what-ifs, joys, regrets and choices and asks what happens
if we let go?

“You have to see Grania in action: she is a highly skilled circus performer, storyteller
and connector, lighting up the entire stage.” LucyLovesCircus

Opera North - Rigoletto

RIGOLETTO

Music Giuseppe Verdi
Libretto Francesco Maria Piave
First performance Venice, 1851

New production

Rigoletto exists on the margins of a world owned by the privileged few – and is despised by them for his difference. He is in the pay of the Duke of Mantua, a man who is living proof that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Twisted inside by the life he has been forced to lead, Rigoletto is both feared for his sharp tongue and ridiculed for his appearance by the Duke’s entourage. The only thing he lives for is his daughter, Gilda, of whom he is obsessively protective. When, finally, a combination of bitterness and bravura get the better of him, the consequences for his most precious possession are fatal.

Verdi clothes this hard-hitting masterpiece in some of his most impassioned music. Rigoletto contains one of the most popular tenor arias of all time – the Duke’s ‘La donna è mobile – but the jauntiness of the tune takes on a much more chilling aspect in the context of a drama which explores the extremes of emotional exploitation.

This new production of Rigoletto is conducted by Opera North’s Music Director Garry Walker, and directed by one of the UK’s leading theatre artists, Femi Elufowoju Jr., who makes his opera directing debut. American baritone Eric Greene, whose previous work for Opera North includes Amonasro in Aida and Billy Bigelow in Carousel, sings the title role in a work of shattering power.

Opera North - Carmen (2022)

CARMEN

Music Georges Bizet
Libretto Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy
First performance Paris, 1875

New production

Bizet’s masterpiece of sexual obsession and self-destruction is enduringly popular for many reasons, not the least of which is its brilliantly characterful score. It’s the story of a woman on the margins of society, driven by a fierce, uncompromising desire for personal liberty, and of a man who, in the grip of sexual obsession, tries to own her.

The opera’s frank sensuality, stark emotional realism and brutal violence outraged many in its first audiences, and it was widely condemned for its perceived immorality. Almost 150 years later, Carmen presents new challenges to contemporary sensibilities, whilst Bizet’s music – overflowing with passion, colour, energy and unforgettable melody – continues to mesmerise.

Edward Dick directs our first Carmen in ten years following his triumphant Tosca for the Company in 2018.

‘The production’s real strengths … lie in Dick’s understanding of the psychological dynamics between the protagonists … It’s compelling stuff, disquieting, creepy and exciting in equal measure.’ Tim Ashley, The Guardian, on Tosca, 2018

ALCINA

Music George Frideric Handel
Libretto Anon.
First performance London, 1735

New production

On an island paradise, a young man, Ruggiero, has fallen under the spell of a woman, Alcina, who is experiencing real love for the very first time. But on Alcina’s island nothing is as it seems, for she is an enchantress who transforms her discarded lovers into non-human form, and her island is a barren wasteland whose apparent beauty is maintained only by her powers of illusion. When Bradamante, Ruggiero’s fiancée, arrives on the island intent on reclaiming her lost love, Alcina’s magic is tested to breaking point.

This extraordinary tale of deception and disguise, of love and loss, of enchantment and illusion, is told in some of Handel’s most richly inventive music, such as Ruggiero’s regretful farewell to the beauty of Alcina’s island, ‘Verdi prati’.

Our first ever production of one of Handel’s most popular operas is directed by Tim Albery, responsible for a sumptuous revival of Giulio Cesare for Opera North in 2019. It reunites him with Baroque specialist Laurence Cummings, who led the Company’s highly acclaimed production of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea in 2014.

A Tale of Two Cities

If you’ve never read Dickens’ 1859 novel of revolution and excessive gestures of love, then this is the
show for you. If you have read it, this might also be the show for you, depending on how well you
remember it.

Dickens left a lot out of his novel, particularly when it comes to Lucie, the central female
character. She was underwritten, all her psychological complexity left on the cutting room
floor. This show picks up those offcuts and sticks them together, possibly in the wrong order, to
rediscover the real story of this complex, troubled, funny 21st century woman.

From the creators of Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me) and Juliet & Romeo, comes a re-staging
of one of the bestselling novels of all time (allegedly). Part dance, part theatre, part fictionalised
documentary, no-part costume drama, this is Lost Dog’s nearly unrecognisable re-imagining of a
classic.

The Blow Monkeys

With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyer belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley.

Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day.

From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group.

As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.
