Siri Hustvedt

Thursday 23 May 2019,6.30pm
Waterstones Deansgate

One of the world’s leading feminist writers and thinkers, Siri Hustvedt was born in Minnesota and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her work includes a collection of poetry, five essay collections including Living, Thinking, Looking and A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women, a memoir The Shaking Woman, and seven novels including The Blindfold, What I Loved and the Man Booker Prize longlisted The Blazing World.

In Siri’s superb new novel Memories of the Future, S.H. is clearing out her mother’s house when she finds her old notebook and drafts of an incomplete novel. They concern the bizarre and ominous rantings of Lucy, the woman who lived next door to S.H. when she first moved to New York in the 1970s. Putting the notes against her memories, S.H. creates a conversation between the past and the present which explores gender, violence, sanity, madness and our desires. Punctuated by Siri Hustvedt’s own illustrations, Memories of the Future is a provocative, engaging and wildly funny novel by one of America’s most acclaimed and beloved writers.

Hosted by Katie Popperwell and presented in partnership with the Centre for New Writing and Creative Manchester.
