IL BUCO (U) Dir. Michelangelo Frammartino. Italy/France/Germany 2021. 93 mins. In Italian with English subtitles. Compelling and lyrical, this is cinema with a capital C! Inspired by a 1961 caving expedition into the caves of Calabria, Italy, the film parallels the young explorers’ mapping of the caves against the life of an elderly shepherd working nearby. With neither story overlapping and the film taking a near-wordless approach, Il Buco is an experience like no other, as nature takes is course and the audience sits back and absorbs the sheer scale of it all. Utterly mesmerising and transcendent. “Arrestingly beautiful” THE OBSERVER
