  • Timothy Walker: The Subtle Science and Exact Art of Colour in English Garden Design presented by The Arts Society, Halifax

In 1888 Gertrude Jekyll wrote a short but seminal article in The Garden in which she urged the readers to “remember that in a garden we are painting a picture”. As a watercolourist, Gertrude was familiar with the principles of using colour but felt that they were neglected in garden design. We look at how contemporary work of Turner, Monet, Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Hockney evolved in parallel with ideas as to what a garden border should look like.
