Champian Fulton Trio
Tickets for Champian Fulton Trio at The Cinnamon Club
Born in Oklahoma, Champian Fulton is an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and vocalist, recognised by her peers and critics as distinctive and sophisticated. Her performances are invariably swinging and engaging, captivating audiences both in New York jazz clubs and at festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls the world over.
Her father, jazz trumpeter Stephen Fulton was a protegé of the great Clark Terry. Consequently Champian grew up surrounded by music and in the company of some of the world’s most highly regarded jazz musicians. Her first paid musical engagement was with her own band at Clark Terry’s 75th Birthday Party - she was 10 years old.
Now a leading light on the vibrant New York Jazz scene, she has performed with many of the jazz greats, including Lou Donaldson, Frank Wess, Eric Alexander, Buster Williams, and Louis Hayes.
Although still in her twenties she has recorded six albums as a leader and enjoys a busy international touring schedule.
Her most recent release, After Dark, is a tribute to Dinah Washington, who influenced Champian’s vocal style more than any other singer.
Joining Champian will be Stephen Keogh on drums and Arnie Somogyi on bass.
“All of the records in the house belonged to my father except one Louis Armstrong CD that Clark [Terry] had sent me, and Dinah Washington’s For Those in Love. I played it repeatedly, until I could sing every single note of the songs and the solos too!,” Champian remembers.
A Rising Jazz Star in Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll, Champian’s “galvanising presence” (the New Yorker) and her alluring musical presentation have made her “a charming young steward of the mainstream Jazz tradition.” (The New York Times).
