DOVE COTTAGE

In late 1799, while on a walking tour of the Lake District, William Wordsworth saw Dove Cottage in Grasmere and decided to make it his home. He had known the valley as a boy, describing it as ‘paradise’. Within a few weeks, Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy had moved in and were busily furnishing the home and planning a garden.  It was whilst living here that Wordsworth produced most of his greatest and best-loved poems, and Dorothy wrote her fascinating Grasmere journal.

A visit to Dove Cottage today transports you back to this remarkable period of ‘plain living and high thinking’. The sights, sounds and smells bring to life the bustling family home the Wordsworths would have known over 200 years ago. In this humble Lake District cottage, you can feel how a unique combination of people and place came together and changed poetry forever.

THE GARDEN-ORCHARD

Take a stroll through the delightful fell-side garden behind Dove Cottage, which Wordsworth referred to as a ‘little domestic slip of mountain’.

The garden has been restored to the half-wild state that Wordsworth and Dorothy lovingly created from local plants and materials. It was a place of peace and inspiration for Wordsworth, who would often compose poetry outdoors.

Whether you see snowdrops in winter, daffodils and bluebells in spring, an abundance of wildflowers through summer, or the changing colours of the leaves in autumn, Dove Cottage garden is stunning in all seasons.

THE MUSEUM

Uncover Wordsworth’s radical and creative life in the new and expanded Museum and enjoy breathtaking views of Grasmere Vale from a unique Viewing Platform.

Discover William Wordsworth’s remarkable story through a unique collection of some of the greatest treasures from the Romantic age. Objects, maps and interactive displays will help you to unravel the adventures that shaped Wordsworth’s thoughts and inspirations.

The Museum will have a range of activities for children. Have a go at writing with a quill and ink, dress up in Georgian clothes, play with traditional toys or take on a Minecraft challenge.

Altrincham Film Club Presents the comedy drama - “EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED”, starring Elijah Wood

A young Jewish-American man obsessed with his family history, Jonathan Safran Foer (Elijah Wood) decides to travel to Ukraine to find out more about the life of his grandfather, armed with an old photograph and a pocket full of small plastic bags. Guided by Alex (Eugene Hutz), a rap-obsessed local, Jonathan ventures into the heartland of Ukraine trying to shed light on events that occurred during World War II. Joining them on the road trip is Alex's surly grandfather (Boris Leskin)and a dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED is a film that grows in reflection. The first time I saw it, I was hurtling down the tracks of a goofy ethnic comedy when suddenly we entered dark and dangerous territory. The second time, I was more aware of the journey director Liev Schreiber was taking us on, and why it is necessary to begin where he begins in order to get where he’s going.” A strong recommendation from internationally respected film critic Roger Ebert.

Days Like These
is a new exhibition which shares the stories of Salford in 2020, using paintings, photographs, films and poetry contributed by some of the 245,000 residents of the city - from empty Salford streets and the joy of reuniting, to the impact on frontline workers and the challenges of being alone.  The exhibition wants to reflect the hopes and fears of everyone, then and now, and after you have seen the exhibition, we hope you contribute too.

Alongside is a new display of the best of Salford’s own LS Lowry – an artist known for his paintings of crowded city streets, and vast empty landscapes.

The exhibition forms part of the Spirit of Salford initiative – a scheme designed to celebrate the unique personality and pioneering spirit of Salford.

Big Top in the Park: Lost in Translation Circus – Above

An enchanting circus fable that will mesmerise audiences of all ages.

Enter the forest, get lost in the tree tops and discover a whole new world.

Freely inspired from Italo Calvino’s novel “The Baron in the Trees”, this thrilling circus show will enchant you and amaze you, taking you somewhere between the ground and the sky, reverie and reality.

Above is a playful, romantic fable, following the life of Cosimo who at 12 years old rebels against his family and climbs a tree in protest at being forced to eat snails, vowing that his feet will never touch the ground again. He spends the rest of his life in the trees, has adventures with bandits and pirates, explores the forest, falls in love, and watches the revolutionary ideas of The Age of Enlightenment unfold beneath him. With high flying aerial stunts, amazing acrobatics, stunning visuals, and fun physical comedy, Above is a rich theatrical experience for the whole family.

Big Top in the Park: Comedy Club 4 Kids

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! A decade later, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up. The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it's just like a normal comedy club, but it's on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like "why is that your face!?"

"A highlight for children in recent years, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy... with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club" - The Guardian
"The ethos is just right" - The Daily Telegraph
"The perfect way to entertain the whole family." - Three Weeks
"All in all this show was great." - The Scotsman
"Comedy Club 4 Kids has stand-up sets from grown-up, high-quality acts who perform their usual sets, just without the swearing or rude bits." - The Independent

Nikki Rummer - Unbroken
Unbroken is Nikki Rummer’s debut as a solo performer: beloved father David Bruce Rummer summons his family for one last Christmas with the whole clan. Across three bittersweet weeks, three generations celebrate the life a man who demands to be remembered, looking wide-eyed to the past to make sense of their rapidly changing futures.
Told through the eyes of a daughter, Unbroken is a one-woman show that brings a whole family to life. The pieces of memories and fragments of secrets are woven into the body of one performer as she unpicks the question: Am I going to end up like them?
Combining her talent for storytelling and her unique movement language inspired by her acrobatics, gymnastics and capoeira practice, Nikki tells a very personal story with universal resonance.

This production has been co-commissioned by The Lowry.

You’ll need to reserve your seats on a specific train and time.  We’re still planning on seating family groups of bubbles in separate compartments or tables away from other passengers to help keep everyone safe.  Once onboard you’ll enjoy a 50 minute ride on one of our steam-hauled trains.

There will be hand sanitiser available when you arrive as well as onboard the train, and our volunteers will be cleaning the train between journeys too (we’ve increased the gap between train times to help us achieve this safely).

Before or after your train ride you’ll be able to enjoy face painting, balloon modelling and family entertainment on Bitton Station.  More details will be announced as restrictions are eased and it’s clearer which activities are possible.  But, most importantly of all, you’ll have a great time with us!

A NIGHT OF MUSIC FEATURING HITS FROM:

Evita
Lion King
Jesus Christ Superstar
Les Miserable
Phantom of the Opera

His first success was as the lead singer of the band 'Peter and the Wolves'. Peter later toured the country as a singer and then went to London as a busker before he got his first role in a show. He has stared in most major musicals (Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera), often as the main roles. He is best known for the role as the Phantom in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical 'The Phantom of the Opera'. He was twice voted the favourite Phantom of members of the international Phantom Appreciation Society. The Vancouver Sun described his performance in the role as "definitive". He has appeared in concerts around the world, on television and on the radio. His own Beyond the Mask concert tour has been an international success, receiving excellent reviews. He has hosted his own radio and TV show in Wales. He created the title role in Bernard J. Taylor's dark musical 'Nosferatu'. The role was specifically written for Karrie, with his vocal range in mind. Karrie's TV show in Wales is called 'Young at Heart' and he has previously presented his own show 'Karrie on Karrie'. He appeared on Welsh TV's 'Children in Need' and at the 'Music Under the Stars' concert at the Faenol Festival in 2001

Titania McGrath
Feelings don’t care about your facts…

Titania McGrath is a world-renowned millennial icon and radical intersectionalist poet committed to feminism, social justice and armed peaceful protest, and she’s coming to show you – yes, YOU – why you are wrong about everything!

MXINFESTO takes the form of a confrontational lecture in which Titania guides her audience through the, often bewildering, array of terminology and concepts that constitute 21stcentury “wokeness”. New words such as “manterrupting”, “microaggressions” and “heteronormativity” often leave the general public bemused, particularly if they don’t read the Guardian.

Having conquered the world of social media, Titania is now generously bestowing her wisdom onto a live audience. Her step-by-step guide will enable her audience to become the woke people they need to be in an increasingly progressive world. In a non-patronising manner, Titania will explain where exactly they are going wrong and how to be more like her.

Charlie and Stan

David Pugh, Told by an Idiot and Theatre Royal Bath Productions present
CHARLIE AND STAN
Written and Directed by Paul Hunter

In 1910, the then unknown  Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail onboard a tramp steamer from Liverpool to New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe. On the voyage, they shared a cabin, they shared comedy routines and they shared laughter but by the end of the journey they had drifted apart...yet they would both go on to become the biggest stars of the age.

Inspired by real life events, Told by an Idiot’s acclaimed production of Charlie and Stan is the remarkable story of the greatest comedy double act that nearly was. With an original piano score played live every night, Charlie and Stan is a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever.

Told by an Idiot have garnered critical acclaim and devoted audiences worldwide for their wonderfully theatrical shows. With Charlie and Stan they have uncovered a hidden and poignant chapter of comedy history shining an unusual light on a pair of show business legends.

This “blissful entertainment” (Daily Telegraph) is coming to CITY prior to London’s glittering West End.

“Invention stuffed and music crammed.
A glimpse of the double that could have been in this silly, sublime treat”
Daily Telegraph

 “Seldom less than magical”

James Taylor Quartet
James Taylor Quartet: the last word in funk.

Funk is a way of life for the James Taylor Quartet, which has been one of the main proponents of funk and acid jazz in Britain for more than a quarter of a century. Since its formation in 1985, the quartet has embodied creativity and surprises, and is especially known for its electrifying live performances. Join them for a truly special show.

A journey from jazz funk to acid jazz
Also known as JTQ, the James Taylor Quartet was founded in 1985 when James Taylor, a Hammond organ player, was looking for a new musical project to replace his former band. Drums, guitar and bass make up the other three pieces of the quartet, while many recordings and live performances feature guest vocalists. The band became known for their covers of film theme tunes, from 'Blow-Up' (their first single, released in 1987) to 'Mrs Robinson', 'Goldfinger' and 'The Theme from Starsky and Hutch'. James Taylor Quartet songs are almost always a funked-up version of the original, with a fast-paced rhythm and punk-influenced style of playing that leaves plenty of room for one of James Taylor's virtuoso Hammond organ instrumentals. With a rough, often heavily improvised style, the group became famous for their incredible live performances that turned both songs and genres on their heads to approach dance music. It's almost impossible to watch the James Taylor Quartet live without getting your groove on - and with so much creative freedom thrown into the mix, you can never be quite sure what you're going to get.

Be thrilled by the James Taylor Quartet live
After a brief detour from jazz funk to concentrate on acid jazz in the 1990s - during which time the James Taylor Quartet had a top 40 single and released one of their best ever selling albums, 'In the Hand of the Inevitable' - the band returned to their roots and began releasing more funk and soul-influenced songs. James Taylor Quartet gigs inevitably feature a mixture of cinematic covers and original compositions, with stunning improvisation allowing the two to melt seamlessly into one another. They have worked with Tom Jones, Manic Street Preachers, U2 and The Pogues, made numerous television appearances, and contributed to film soundtracks including 'Austin Powers'. While the output of James Taylor Quartet albums has been prodigious, 2018 saw the group finally realise a long-awaited project when they recorded an orchestral album ('Soundtrack from Electric Black') based on the legacy of great film composers but adding a rougher, more punk-like vibe to proceedings. It was proof that this band is still full of surprises, and just as fresh and creative as they ever were. Don't miss out on an electrifying performance.

The Killer Question
The Silence Of The Lambs meets Last Of The Summer Wine in dark comedy thriller The Killer Question. Former game show champion Walter Crump lives for murder (it was even his specialist subject on the nerve shredding, general knowledge quiz show The Chair). But did his obsession with death ultimately lead to his own? That’s certainly what Inspector Black believes, and now it is Crump’s dopey widow Margaret who finds herself in the chair – accused of her husband’s murder.
But as shocking details emerge about the events leading up to Walter’s final head to head, it quickly transpires that what started out as an open and shut case has turned into another game altogether: the cat and mouse variety, with more than one deadly twist in the tale.
Will Inspector Black solve the mystery? Will Margaret be home in time for Country File? Who will prove to be the ultimate victim of The Chair? And, just as important, which actor will play which character… the audience decides!

An Evening With Paul Scholes
A evening with one the greatest to ever play the beautiful game but don't just take our word for it, here is what other legends had to say about Paul Scholes......

Pele:
"If he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more."

Zinedine Zidane:
"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder."

Luis Figo:
"I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears."

Edgar Davids:
"I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is."

Xavi:
"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen – the most complete – is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more."

Patrick Vieira:
"The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes."

Roy Keane:
"An amazingly gifted player who remained an unaffected human being."

Laurent Blanc:
"I tell anyone who asks me – Scholes is the best English player."

Thierry Henry:
"I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other ‘stars’."

This exclusive show will see a LIVE & UNSCRIPTED 2 part interview, reminiscing about those glorious football memories and get an real life insight to the behind the scenes at the clubs he has played for. Who knows what will happen when Paul Scholes hits the stage to give you ‘off the camera’ life and career stories.
Some fans will have the opportunity to meet Paul before the show for a meet and greet which includes a Q&A and the chance to bring your own to be signed. (Paintings excluded)

The Cavern Beatles

On February 9th 1961, The Beatles made the first of their 292 appearances at the now legendary Cavern Club in Mathew Street, Liverpool.

50 years on, The Cavern Beatles, a band fully endorsed and licensed by the same club will be coming to a venue near you with their remarkable show.

The show is a Magical History Tour through the works of the greatest pop music phenomenon. Replicating, in both sight and sound, the excitement and energy of Beatlemania, the psychedelic era of Sgt. Pepper, and the creative masterpieces of The White Album and Abbey Road.

Four costume changes and lighting scenes compliment the changes in musical complexity as the show develops to it’s climax.

The band’s cast members, as well as being talented instrumentalists and singers, are hugely dedicated Beatle fans, intent on recreating their individual character on stage. Their uncanny vocal resemblance to the Fab Four is due to their upbringing in the same place…Liverpool.

As ambassadors of “The most famous club in the world”, The Cavern Beatles bring to the stage the music that has now influenced 3 generations.

Their breath-taking attention to detail has drawn the attention of German music companies, Hofner Guitars and Pyramid Strings, both of whom now endorse them with their products.

With their widespread appeal being more apparent than ever in the varying age groups that continue to follow the band, The Cavern Beatles are widely regarded as being as close to the real thing as they are ever likely to get.

THE BALLAD OF MARIA MARTEN

Eastern Angles and Matthew Linley Creative Projects in association with the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough

THE BALLAD OF MARIA MARTEN
By Beth Flintoff
Directed by Hal Chambers

A thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery…

(for East Anglian venues - A thrilling retelling of Suffolk’s real-life murder mystery…)

Summer, 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her body is found under the floor of the barn in a grain sack, barely identifiable, and the manhunt begins.

Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and filmmakers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama – a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions.

But in all this hysteria Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life.

Louder is not always Clearer
Louder Is Not Always Clearer
A Mr and Mrs Clark Production

Jonny is a teacher, a workshop leader and an avid football fan. He’s just become a
father. His friends say that he’s outgoing and that he loves music, festivals and
nightclubs. Jonny is deaf. He was born deaf to hearing parents who were afraid that
disability would stigmatise their son and the family.

‘Louder Is Not Always Clearer’ is an honest portrayal of the vulnerability of a deaf
man, created and performed by a deaf man. For a hearing audience it is an
illuminating and emotional experience. For deaf audience members the show is a
familiar tale of misunderstanding and isolation. For all audiences it is a humorous
and at times moving story of one man’s attempt to cope, to fit in and be accepted.

Mr and Mrs Clark make new and thought provoking performances that engage and
entertain audiences. The Clarks were short-listed for the Amnesty International
Freedom of Expression Award in 2015 and presented (F.E.A.R.) as part of Wales In
Edinburgh in 2017. Louder Is Not Always Clearer was short-listed for a Total Theatre
Award in 2019.

Steeped in a stunning catalogue of proud and stirring hit songs such as ‘Fields of Fire’, ‘Chance’, ‘In A Big Country’ (which sold 2 million), ‘East Of Eden’ and their biggest UK hit ‘Look Away’, along with massive albums such ‘The Seer’, ‘Steeltown’, ‘Peace In Our Time’ and the triple Grammy –nominated, ‘The Crossing’, Big Country continue to look beyond the next horizon.

The band broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles ‘Fields Of Fire’, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over 2 million copies and driving ‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA.

The run of success continued throughout the 1980s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984), which debuted at Number 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles ‘East Of Eden, ‘Just a Shadow’ and ‘Where The Rose Is Sown’.

FEATURING ASTAR-STUDDED CAST FROM STAGE AND SCREEN

Mark Moraghan, SianReeves, Parry Glasspool, Lucy Dixon & Eric Potts

join Lynn Francis, Danny O'Brien, Roy Carruthers and Chloe McDonald.

Adapted from Helen Forrester’s million-selling book, By The Waters Of Liverpool is a stunning period drama set in the 1930s. The story opens in 1935. Helen is sixteen years old and fighting a bitter battle with her parents for the right to educate herself and go out to work. During the Great Depression, Helen’s father lost his fortune when the stock market crashed and the family were suddenly thrown into poverty. Leaving behind the nannies, servants and comfortable middle-class life in the South West of England, the Forrester’s chose Liverpool as the place to start over. They were in for a terrible shock. Taken out of school to care for her younger brothers and sisters while her parents struggled to re-build their shattered lives, Helen is treated as an unpaid slave and desperate to escape. By 1939, now aged twenty and with Britain on the brink of war, she has still never been kissed by a man. But things start looking up for Helen when she meets a tall strong seaman and falls in love.

By The Waters Of Liverpool also features flashbacks to Helen’s earlier books Liverpool Miss and Twopence To Cross The Mersey. I’ve even weaved in a storyline from Helen’s fourth autobiography, Lime Street At Two. That way those unfamiliar with Helen’s work still get a complete picture of her life”.

Akram Khan – Xenos

Out of all the creations I have been blessed to be involved in, XENOS is the one that I find to be the closest in line with my personal journey as an artist.

The themes of reflection, death, rebirth, time, alienation, identity, memory, are all part of this creative process, and together with some incredible collaborators, I have embarked on this challenging journey, to give birth to XENOS.

Essentially, this work is a reflection of how I feel about our world today. It is about our loss of humanity, and how, through past and present wars, we are yet again confronted by the burning question of what it is to be human. How can we as humans, have such ability to create extraordinary and beautiful things from our imagination, and equally, our immense ability to create and commit violence and horrors beyond our imagination.

Prometheus saw this in mankind before we, as a species, ever recognised it.

Rambert - Draw From Within

DRAW FROM WITHIN
Wim Vandekeybus

Draw from Within began life in 2020 as a live digital broadcast and was an instant hit. Now reworked to be performed in a theatre with a face-to-face audience , Rambert’s brilliant dancers rip and roll through contrasting, vivid theatrical worlds. Some dream worlds, some full-on nightmares, some sweet and funny.

Wim Vandekeybus and Rambert have created an exhilarating reflection on a time when we’re desperate for old-fashioned physical interaction, and find ourselves wondering which way is up.

And my, is its new piece brilliantly danced: those 19 Rambertians perform like racehorses elated at having at long last been let out of the traps. - The Telegraph

The Spirit of Elvis
In Stoke on Trent in the early seventies, a young Gordon Hendricks played to an imaginary crowd. Harmonizing his voice to a constant soundtrack, played on repeat by his sisters. The music was Rock n Roll. The Artist was Elvis.

Little did he know then that his performance in his potteries home would lead to a phenomenal career impersonating The King, working with his legendary musicians in years to come.

Karaoke led to ITV’s ‘Stars in their Eyes’ where he rose from runner-up to series champion winning by a record number of votes. Watched by 12 million viewers astounded by their ears
and eyes. And it wasn’t just the public. Elvis’ own songwriter Geoff Morrow was watching. Touched by Gordon’s voice that “recaptured the spirit of the song”, Geoff signed Gordon to his label and the two recorded and released “Where Will I Be”, a song originally written for Elvis.

Gordon’s received many accolades. The greatest being crowned ‘Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artiste Champion 2017’ on stage at Graceland for the second time, competing against global artists.

He’s toured the world and now he’s coming home. ‘The Spirit of Elvis in Concert’ tour transports you through time from the ‘68 special through to the Vegas era, breathing soul into ballads and those iconic jumpsuit numbers that set the stage on fire. There’s only one Elvis Presley and there’s only one artiste who captures his spirit on stage – the inimitable Gordon Hendricks.

Dirty Dusting

Production company Entertainment Unlimited have embarked on another UK wide tour in Autumn 2021 with the laugh out loud comedy, Dirty Dusting.

THIS IS AN EVENING OF PURE THEATRICAL VIAGRA

Our 2021 production stars Vicki Michelle (‘Allo ‘Allo!) and Vicky Entwistle (Coronation Street) Leah Bell completes the threesome.

Gladys, Olive and Elsie are three “vintage style” cleaning ladies who, threatened with redundancy, chance on an ‘unconventional’ way of earning some extra cash.

A wrong number requiring a Sex Chat Line rings into the office and gives them a great idea… “Why not start their own Sex Chat Line?” After all, their age and appearance won’t matter on the telephone and providing they can keep this a secret from Dave, their boss…they could be onto a winner!
What could possibly go wrong????

Written by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, this production is directed by Leah Bell who injects this hilarious play with a fresh and lively approach coupled with her own unique comedic style.

Fin Taylor

Fin Taylor: So My Wife...

We want stand-ups to speak truth to power. But lately no one agrees on what’s true or who’s in power.

What are comedians to do in the age of post-truth and identity politics? Is it possible to make everyone laugh when half the crowd thinks comedy’s too PC and the other half thinks the opposite? What do we talk about after this year when nothing happened and the only thing that did, everyone’s sick to death of?

I’ll tell you what we do.
We go back to the old ways.

We put on a suit,
And we talk about our wife.

As seen on Live At The Apollo, 8 out of 10 Cats, The Mash Report and Roast Battle, Fin has also written for The Roast of Alec Baldwin on Comedy Central US.

Tell Me on a Sunday

Returning to the stage following her acclaimed performances in the National Theatre’s production of A Taste of Honey, Oliver!, One Man Two Governors, Annie, Abigail's Party and Calamity Jane, Jodie Prenger stars as ‘Emma’, in the 2021 UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s classic musical, TELL ME ON A SUNDAY reprising a role Jodie first bought to life in 2016.

TELL ME ON A SUNDAY charts the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York in the heady days of the 1980’s. Brimming with optimism, she seeks success and love. But as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches she begins to wonder whether she's been looking for love in all the wrong places.

This iconic musical features Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wonderful score, accompanied live by West End musicians, including the chart-topping Take That Look Off Your Face, and title track Tell Me On A Sunday. Previously performed by iconic musical theatre stars Marti Webb and Sarah Brightman, this new production directed by Paul Foster includes an intimate post-show chat with Jodie charting her life, love and experience playing the role of ‘Emma’.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s numerous awards include 7 TONYs, 3 Grammys, 7 Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, 2 Emmys and the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre.

Don Black is an Oscar winning lyrist (Born Free) who has penned numerous James Bond theme tunes and chart hits including Michael Jackson’s Ben and Lulu’s To Sir With Love.

Contra

Performance artist Laura Murphy fuses aerial rope, stand up, theatre and live art in this groundbreaking, feminist solo-work.

Written and performed by Laura Murphy | Directed by Ursula Martinez

Drawing from circus, stand-up and live art, Contra is a solo-cabaret of contradictions. Fierce, witty and uncompromising, this highly physical show interrogates personal, social and historical occupations of the female body and explores, literally, where such bodies are positioned and how we are meant to look at them. Expect scenes of nudity, aerial acrobatics, and explicit references to mythical reptiles and female sexuality.

Created in part as a contribution to the #metoo movement, Contra is an intervention into perceptions of gender, femininity, queerness & consent:

“In Contra I use my body as a relatable starting point for discussing wider social issues, and use layers of humour, text and physicality to make the critical perspective more accessible. Bringing my naked body into the room puts social and political occupations of that body visually on the table for discussion: I embody Eve tempted and then let loose, billboard advertisements, pleasant faces, bodies packaged and consumed...you see vulnerability, a victim, a retaliator, a strong-woman acrobat and a feminist. In confronting my own experiences of these embodyments and particularly of gendered violence, I hope to inspire feelings of solidarity & encourage audiences to do the same” - Laura Murphy

Fresh to the Uk from a European tour, Contra is a highly physical, funny and thought provoking work of contemporary performance. Laura's methodology involves asking her circus technique to serve the work rather than lead it, helping her to push the boundaries of what is expected from aerial work and what aerial disciplines are able to communicate within a theatrical context. Through lip sync, spoken text, dance and aerial rope choreography, Laura juxtaposes her autobiographical accounts with the voices of comedians, preachers, pop vocalists and strangers on public transport. Delivered with humour, honesty and poignancy, Laura shares stories of bodily functions, heartbreak and family discussions of lesbian sex. Beautifully surreal and comically astute, Contra unpicks the absurdity and contradictions of female identity in the present day.

Audience comments: "...thought provoking, entertaining and progressive...unapologetic" | " Contra provides the pleasures of spectacle and deconstructs itself neatly in the process " | "... a radical overturning of conventional expectations of aerial performance and performers. "

Laura Murphy is a genre-defying queer performance maker from Bristol who makes text-driven and dynamic physical work about things that she thinks need to be talked about. Her work is cross-disciplinary fusion of theatre, live art, aerial choreography, dance and verbal explosions, which integrates intimacy and spectacle. Laura is a CircusNext Laureate 2018-19 (European programme coordinated by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe and supported by the European Union) and PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield, researching aerial work as critical performance.

Ursula Martinez is a theatre maker (writer, performer and director). She co-directed the award-winning Office Party, and directed Victoria Melody’s Northern Soul, Leah Shelton’s Bitch on Heat and Lucy McCormick’s Triple Threat. She is an original cast member of the Olivier Award winning contemporary circus/variety phenomena La Clique and La Soiree, and is an associate artist with performance provocateurs ‘Duckie’. Martinez’s solo shows include A Family Outing, My Stories, Your Emails, and Free Admission, in addition to Wild Bore an  international collaboration with Adrienne Truscott (US) and Zoe Coombs Marr (Australia). For all her theatrical accolades, Martinez is probably most well known for pulling red hankies out of her vagina!

After a number of successful top-twenty singles in the UK, the band went on to score unprecedented international success with the release of the classic ‘Nightbirds” recording and the title track has now become a standard in the popular music repertoire.  This success was repeated with the top-ten hit “Down on the Street and the award-winning video established the band’s personnel of Jill Saward(lead vocs), Bill Sharpe(keys),Keith Winter(gtr),  George Anderson(bass) and Roger Odell(drums). With the magic Al Jarreau/Shakatak combination, the group went on to record the track ‘Day by Day’ to further international acclaim.

Along with this successful recording career, Shakatak had firmly established themselves as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun that communicated strongly with world-wide audiences. Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival-other awards include the “Best Instrumental Album’ for 6 consecutive years-and other live concerts of note have been the East meets the West Border Concert at the time of German re-unificationin 1989 and the open air concert in Cape Town for the Millennium Celebrations 2000 where they played in front of 250,000 people.Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group.

Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’.  This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.

Count Magnus – Two Ghost Stories by MR James

Nunkie Theatre Company presents
Count Magnus – Two Ghost Stories by M R James.

“At first they hear nothing at all. Then they hear someone scream, just as if the most inside part of his soul was twisted out of him.”

The ghost stories of M R James amuse and terrify as powerfully today as when they were first written over a century ago. Nunkie Theatre Company brings two of these classic spinechillers to life, in this thrilling one-man show.

In Count Magnus a travel-writer’s over-inquisitiveness leads to a diabolical chase from darkest Sweden to rural Essex. Denmark is the setting for Number 13, where a hotel room with the famously unlucky number, conceals a ghastly, baffling secret.

Grayson Perry – A Show For Normal People

Despite being an award-winning artist, Bafta-winning TV presenter, Reith Lecturer and bestselling author, Grayson Perry is a normal person – and just like other normal people, he’s marginally aware that we’re all going to die.

Born in Essex in 1960, Grayson has had a career spanning 40 years. From his A House for Essex, a permanent building constructed in the North Essex countryside in 2015, to Grayson Perry’s Big American Road Trip - a three-part documentary travelogue in which he explored the meaning of the American Dream today - and Grayson’s Art Club, which brought the nation together during lockdown through art, making new works and hosting masterclasses, Perry is somewhat an expert in making lemonade out of the mundanity of life.

Let Grayson take you through an enlightening and eye-watering evening in which this kind of existentialism descends from worthiness to silliness. You’ll leave safe and warm in the knowledge that nothing really matters anyway.

Join Grayson as he asks, and possibly answers, these big questions in an evening sure to distract you from the very meaninglessness of life in the way only a man in a dress can.

An Evening With Sir Geoffrey Boycott

~ A Brand New Knight Out! ~

An Evening With Geoffrey Boycott last appeared on stage in 2017. A great deal has happened since then - in the cricket world, the world at large and in the world of our Geoffrey. He has had major heart surgery, become a grandfather for the first time and finally been honoured with a long-overdue knighthood.

Geoffrey’s many fans have expressed their deep disappointment at his disappearance from our airwaves. So, in a packed autumn where England are competing for the T20 World Cup and battling with the old enemy to wrest back control of The Ashes, they will be delighted for this chance to hear what Geoffrey thinks about - well, everything!

Forthright honest views, hilarious anecdotes, personal film footage from an incredible career and a chance for the audience to ask Sir Geoffrey their own questions. It’s a brilliant new evening with our brand new knight.

As ever, this cricket event is being run in aid of the Professional Cricketers’ Association and we raise money from the evening for the Professional Cricketers’ Trust.

Agudo Dance - Carmen

AGUDO DANCE COMPANY
Artistic Director: Jose Agudo
Production: Carmen

Carmen will always be free… she is a gypsy, a Romany, a traveller, an
untamed spirit, captivating and elusive, yet earthy and fiercely alive.
Jose Agudo draws upon his unique palette of Flamenco and contemporary
dance to create this dramatic adaptation of Prosper Merimée’s classic novella.
The company delivers a rich tapestry of human motives and emotions,
unravelling the complex exchange between conformity and freedom; the
tension unleashed by obsessive human behaviour, the desire for self-
disclosure and upholding the right to be free.

Set to an original Flamenco infused score by Bernhard Schimpelsberger and
additional track by Kefaya, Carmen is a story about individuality, freedom,
love and pleasure, and the belief that our journey of twists and turns we call
life is always valuable.

After the sell-out performances of Nutcracker and Swan Lake last year, Russian National Ballet returns to the UK.

Every child’s favourite fairy-tale, Sleeping Beauty is the classic story of love and innocence, mystery and magic set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score.

Stunning choreography, sumptuous costumes and wonderful sets form the fantasy world in which the Lilac Fairy struggles against the evil Carabosse.

Outline based on the fairy-tale by Charles Perrault, the Sleeping Beauty tells of the Princess Aurora, cursed at her christening by the evil Carabosse to prick her finger one day on a spindle and die.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the Lilac Fairy, she doesn’t die, but sleeps for a hundred years.

Woken by a prince, who has battled through the Enchanted Forest to reach her, they marry at a ceremony attended by nursery rhyme characters like Puss in Boots and all the other forest creatures.

There are no scores more successful in supporting the full range of ballet than those by Tchaikovsky.
Highlights include the Famous ‘Rose Adagio’ when Princess Aurora is introduced to four princes.

A wonderful evening out and memories which you will cherish long after the final curtain falls.

Music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky

After the sell-out performances of Nutcracker last year, Russian National Ballet returns to the UK with the most famous Ballet of all time. Swan Lake is one of Tchaikovsky’s best works, featuring some of ballet’s most memorable music and breath-taking dance.

Swan Lake is a tale of two young women, Odette and Odilie, who resembles each other so strikingly one can easily be mistaken for the other.
It is the compelling legend of a tragic romance in which a princess, Odette, is turned into a swan by an evil curse. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful young woman he is instantly captivated – will his love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under?

Swan Lake is full of mystery and romance and has captured the imagination of generations over the years and it continues to attract worldwide audiences, young and old.

A wonderful evening out and memories which you will cherish long after the final curtain falls.

Simply Dylan - Celebrating Bob Dylan's 80th Birthday
A TRIBUTE TO BOB DYLAN, NOT A BOB DYLAN TRIBUTE BAND
Simply Dylan is as straightforward as the title suggests: no frills, no gimmicks and no pretense. Led by front man John O’Connell, the band delivers a tribute to Bob Dylan celebrating the rich and diverse work of the award-winning artist. It is their interpretations, precise playing and high energy renditions of some of Dylan's back catalogue that has caught the attention of many Bobcats.
What started as a modest project in 2011, recognizing Dylan's 70th Birthday, the success of the band has been nothing short of remarkable from selling out the Cavern Club 6 times, to receiving fantastic reviews from audiences across the UK, to opening up the Isle of Wight Festival on the Big Top Stage.
Ten years on, 2021 will see the band celebrate Bob Dylan’s 80th Birthday, touring the UK and once again honoring one of the world’s most prodigious songwriters.
PRESS QUOTES:
“Together, they marry the extraordinary range and beauty of Dylan's lyrics with the joyous and exuberant, celebratory sound I have always secretly wanted to hear whenever, in recent decades, I have listened to Bob Dylan.”
Alan Bleasdale, Playwright
A show every Bob Dylan fan should see.”
Louder than War

“Johnny is one of the most talented musicians I have come across and his Dylan set is effortlessly brilliant."
Peter Hooton, The Farm

“There’s no attempt to look or dress like Dylan or imitate his voice. Instead you get John’s excellent and powerful voice, enunciating the words clearly backed up by a brilliant bassist and violinist.”
Trust the Wizards

“Great songs performed by musicians at the top of their game.”
